The MeiGray Group was first organized in 1997 by Barry Meisel and Bob Gray, two game-worn hockey jersey collectors. Meisel was a New York Daily News award winning sports writer; Gray, a New Jersey native with a business management degree from Cornell. Together they turned their long-term hockey jersey trading relationship in one of today’s leading sports memorabilia companies with an intensely reliable reputation as authenticators for game-worn or game-used sports apparel.
Since the beginning, MeiGray Group has negotiated arrangements with professional sports teams increasing the honesty of disposition of game worn gear, sheltering fans and collectors from getting swindled. By associating with vendors and leagues, MeiGray has developed this hobby into a collectibles as an investment not previously considered possible. Now, marketing these items has benefited not only the collector, but professional teams have improved their financial standing as well as their charitable achievements.
MeiGray has brought integrity to the sports collecting hobby by offering only those game-worn jerseys that come directly from the professional sports teams which they have signed working agreements. These include both the National and American Hockey Leagues, the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles, the MLB’s Texas Rangers and a valuable NBA alliance in which they tag and sell jerseys from the league's special events including NBA Finals jerseys from games one and three, All-Star Weekend jerseys and opening night jerseys to mention just a few.
In 2010, MeiGray offered the starting five jerseys for each NBA team on the NBA's auction site as well as those worn by every member of the defending champion Lakers.
Its game worn hockey jersey program has been very successful in the US and Canada with both minor league hockey and NHL jerseys selling briskly.
Each and every jersey sold is registered in a limited in-house system (The MeiGrade System) which protects game-worn jersey authenticity. This system ensures that the collector will continue to be registered after the sale and is, therefore, always protected. So, in an industry where genuineness continues to be an issue, this company has solved the problem.
From the collector’s perspective, this unique solution is coupled with honest pricing, sometimes less than competitor’s offer for like products. This is true even though quite often MeiGray pays the same amount for the original acquisition as its rival. MeiGray is able to secure its situation by offsetting its smaller profit margin with a larger sales base.

They have persuaded the teams and leagues that in an industry with an authenticity problem, they have solved it with a closely controlled registration system. They have convinced the collecting community that the genuine article is now guaranteed. All of this took hard work, time and in-depth advertising as well as an excellent business plan. Although, MeiGray Group, Inc. remains a private company and is unclassified under business services in New Jersey, it has been steadily growing increasing its staff from the original two to eight full time employees. It appears that the future is bright.
